How to Make a Semi-Professional Snowboard Video

This is what you need: a digital camera with video, a PC or MAC with a free video editing program (they come with Windows and Mac), and a few unrehearsed sessions.

First, record everything. I mean everything, the wipe outs, the lame conversations on the lift, the bong hits afterward…everything! Don’t lose anything! It’s better to have tons of useless video than have to come up short when it comes time to edit.

Now, upload everything to the computer 5 or 6 favorite songs. Obviously fast loud beats with splashy rhythms are best.

Now lets edit. Open up Windows Movie Maker or iMovie on the Mac. Both of these programs can produce some truly professional looking vids. If you’ve never used these programs then read the tutorials or just spend a few hours playing with them.

The first scene will begin with slow friendly music and introduce the cast. The first boarding shot will then start when the first song peaks. A song that starts out slow and then picks up quickly will work best. Follow this up with some carving or some simple tricks.

Next will be a compilation of tricks interspersed with high fives, hugs, chest bumps (for the dudes). This is where you want to start using the tweaking features that are included with the video editing program. You can add text, spin or fade between scenes.

The third scene with be eating, talking, and other non-riding. You can use a little music, but fade it in and out or keep it quiet in the background. Just make it funny.

Next, back to the slopes with heavy thrash music. Mid way in this scene display wipe outs and the bone breakers. Screams and whining are always a good touch. End this section with the best tricks that you recorded, a big air, back flip. You get the picture.

End the movie with some comments about the day. The song needs to be slow to show closure and end with a still shot or a fade. Done!
